Why are Baby Teeth Removed?

A majority of children naturally lose their teeth but there are also other reasons teeth may need to be extracted. Tooth extractions are performed by a dentist or oral surgeon and are relatively quick outpatient procedures with either local, general, or intravenous anesthesia, or a combination. Visible teeth can be removed through simple extractions.

Teeth that are broken, below the surface, or impacted require more involved procedures. Impacted teeth may need to be removed in sections. The dentist or oral surgeon will make an incision in the gum to reach the tooth and then remove it. Once the tooth is removed, the area will be cleaned and stitched closed.

How Long is Recovery?

Recovery times vary depending on the type of extraction performed. Simple extractions usually heal within a few days, while more complex extractions may take a week or longer.
